This Month in 1867 Pedestrian Arches in Ferryquay Gate to be Closed

Ferryquay GateFrom the Londonderry Sentinel of September 3, 1867: “The Corporation have ordered the small arches at side of Ferryquay Gate to be permanently closed. Two men were employed at the work yesterday, and it is expected to be completed today.  Since the erection of the new Gate, the small arches have provided facilities for mischievous juveniles to conceal themselves and annoy respectable people as they pass through the Gate. We have already call attention to this nuisance, as well as others in connection with the same construction, and we are glad to notice that steps have been taken to remedy them.”
